Dog Skin Allergies

Dog skin allergies are not uncommon amongst many dogs. This is actually quite normal for many and often they are born with such allergies or have it later in life caused by different factors.

To check if your dog has skin allergies, you need to know a few simple facts. Firstly, such allergies can either last for only a specific period of time or be a long-term one.

Thus, we need to uncover what type of skin allergy your dog is suffering from and find a method to resolve it. Usually, dog skin allergies can be divided into three types.

The first type is known as immune-mediated skin allergies. This occurs when your dog’s immune system is not functioning properly. Your dog will go through problems like skin infections quite often because of this. If you notice your dog suffering from skin infections quite regularly, then you can reasonably suspect that your dog has immune-mediated dog skin allergies.

The second type is called canine atrophic dermatitis. This kind of dog allergy is chronic and usually happens to young puppies. Symptoms are itchiness, in particular in the eye region or paws. If your dog scratches himself/herself quite often and despite bathing or scrubbing the problem still persists, it is possible your pet is suffering from canine atrophic dermatitis.

The third type is classified under infectious skin diseases. For such dog allergies, the animal will have hair dropping from various areas of their body, particularly in the limbs. The skin diseases can be further divided into contagious and non-contagious. Contagious diseases should be contained immediately to avoid further spread of condition. If you have other pets in the house, it is best to isolate them away from your infected dog.

The above classifications are general and meant for the dog owner to assess the seriousness of the allergy. To completely resolve the problem and find out the specific cause, seek medical treatment from a certified vet as soon as possible.
