Flea allergies are caused by the saliva of the flea and not due to flea bite. The saliva acts as the allergen and irritates the skin of the dog. Usually flea allergies can be treated with skin products specially formulated for dogs.

Food dog allergies are not as common as flea allergies. The most typical cause of food dog allergies are the ingredients contained in dog food. The symptoms of food dog allergies are skin irritation and gastrointestinal problems. Food dog allergies are generally treated by restricting your dog’s diet. This type of an allergy is not really solved through medication. However, keep in mind that food allergies among dogs are not very common so rule out all other causes before concluding that your dog is allergic to a certain food.

Contact dog allergies as the name suggests develop when the certain substances come into contact with a dog’s skin. This type of allergy causes itching and irritation. The usual causes of contact allergies are wool, soaps, flea collars, grass, nylon carpets and insect-killers. This kind of an allergy is relatively simple to get rid of. Just identify the allergen and prevent it from coming into contact with the dog.

Atopy is caused when a dog inhales mold or pollen floating about in the air. This is the second most common kind of allergy after flea allergies. Atopy is seasonal in nature since the allergens are dispersed during spring or fall. You can identify the symptoms of atopy if you see your dog licking its paws, scratching itself or notice that its eyes are watering. This type of allergy afflicts female dogs more than male dogs.

Certain breeds of dogs are allergic to the bacteria that reside on their skin. The result is loss of hair and ringworm like skin problems. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial allergies.

Sometimes, dogs may develop allergies due to emotional stress. If they see their owners stressed out, most dogs tend to reflect the same anxiety and show symptoms of allergy.
